Microsoft is hosting its Ignite 2020 conference this week. The event began virtually on September 22 and it will go on until September 24. The three-day event began with the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella giving a keynote speech where he made several key announcements about the company's various products and services, which include Azure, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Defender among others.

So, here are the top developments from Ignite 2020 that you should know about:

-- Linux to get Edge web browser: During his keynote address, Nadella announced that the company's new Chromium-based Edge web browser will be available on Linux starting next month. The company will release a preview of the Edge web browser to Edge Insider testers on Linux next month.

-- Azure Orbital: Microsoft today announced a preview of a new service called Azure Orbital that enables users to quickly analyze data captured from space through physical satellite capabilities. “With access to low-latency global fiber networks and the global scale of Microsoft's cloud services, customers can innovate quickly with large satellite datasets,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

-- Microsoft teams up with AT&T: Microsoft announced a partnership with AT&T. As a part of this partnership, the two companies are teaming up to enable enterprise customers to connect their machines and equipment securely by Azure Sphere guardian devices to the cloud seamlessly via AT&T's cellular network, without needing to rely on Wi-Fi systems. This enables customers to connect their devices where Wi-Fi does not meet their security standards.

-- Microsoft teams up with Shell: Microsoft has teamed up with Shell. As a part of the partnership, Shell will supply Microsoft with renewable energy, helping it to meet its commitment to having a 100% supply of renewable energy by 2025. The two companies will also work together on new digital tools so that the petro-chemicals company can offer its suppliers and customers effective support in reducing their carbon footprints.

-- Surface Hub 2S: At the event, Microsoft also shared details about the Surface Hub. The company announced that the 85-inch model is available for pre-sale reservations for commercial customers in the US, with availability beginning in January 2021. The company also said that it is bringing the full Windows 10 desktop experience to Surface Hub 2S and that it is releasing the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update for Surface Hub 2S.

-- Microsoft Teams gets Together Mode Scenes: At the event, Microsoft announced Together mode scenes, which includes auditoriums, conference rooms, and a coffee shop. This feature will be available in Teams later this year and it will allow presenters to select a scene from the gallery as the default for all meeting attendees. “We're also introducing the use of machine learning in Together mode to automatically scale and center meeting participants in their virtual seats, regardless of how close or far they are from their camera, creating a more realistic visual experience,” the company added in the blog post.

-- Teams gets new Calling experience: The company announced that later this year Microsoft Teams will get a new Calling experience, which will include a streamlined view that shows contacts, voicemail, and calling history at once, making it easier to initiate or return a call with a single click.

-- Teams gets support for 1,000 participants: Microsoft also announced that Teams will be able to support up to 1,000 participants with the full meeting experience by the end of the year. For larger meetings and events that require additional control, Teams will soon seamlessly scale to support 20,000 participants in a view-only meeting experience that includes the ability to use live captions.

-- Microsoft Defender: The company at the virtual conference announced that it was unifying its solutions across Microsoft 365 security and Azure security under one banner. The company said that Microsoft Defender will now be inclusive of Microsoft 365 Defender and Azure Defender and that it would prevent, detect, and respond to threats across identities, endpoints, applications, email, infrastructure, and cloud platforms.

-- New Outlook for Mac: Lastly, the company announced a new Outlook experience for Mac. This not only includes an updated design but also new features such as unified inboxes and support for Office 365, Outlook.com, and Google accounts among other things. The new Outlook for Mac will provide customisable settings across the message list, calendar, and main mail canvas that can be personalized by the users. The new Outlook for Mac will be available to all of our users in mid-October.
