A major update was rolled out to Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) gaming console earlier this month. This Playstation update brought tons of new features including a variety of enhancements such as control centre customisation, screen reader controls, new resolution selector, and new trophy tracker, 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers, and PS Remote Play app and PS App enhancements. The PS5 update also brought the capability to expand the storage capacity of the gaming console by using M.2 SSD, which is a type of high-speed solid-state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console.

Now fresh reports have detailed that this PS5’s September software update also improves the performance of select games. This piece of information was discovered by Digital Foundry. In its Digital Foundry Direct Weekly show, the team talked about the differences between the PS5's performance on the new and old firmware. In the show, the team said that while the performance differences are negligible, the new Playstation 5 update led to select games including Control and Devil May Cry 5 to run about 2- 3% faster than the old firmware. This led to an increase in framerate by about 1 to 2 FPS.

In addition to this, the Digital Foundry team found out that the old PS5 was running updated firmware, while the newer hardware was running older firmware. Upon analysis, the team found that it was the software update that led to the performance change. You can see the entire explanation here.

Coming back to Sony’s PS5 September update, Sony said that once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, the M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. PS5 gamers can also use PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options. Additionally, Sony cautioned that the M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements, which includes PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) interface, 250GB-4TB storage, and 5500 MB/s or faster sequential read speed among others. “Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that meets the dimensional requirements,” the company added.
