Sony fixes PlayStation 4 clock battery issue in latest update

A few months ago there was some trouble regarding Sony PlayStation 4’s internal CMOS battery and “how it should die” when Sony eventually pulls PS Store support off the console rendering the system effectively useless for all intents and purposes. The CMOS battery is used to verify the date and time Trophies have been unlocked on PS4 to prevent cheating. Now, while the battery can be easily replaced if you cannot connect to PSN (PlayStation Network) after you get a new battery you cannot access your games anymore - digital or physical. All PS4 titles need to connect to the network at least once before they can run.

Of course, this was a cause of concern for many hardcore PlayStation users with many of them worrying that they would lose access to current PS4 titles if Sony pulls off PSN support from the console and if the CMOS battery was to die. We have some good news, this is no longer going to be an issue. Sony had fixed this problem with the recent firmware update 9.00.

A YouTuber who goes by the name Modern Vintage Gamer (MVG), according to reports, investigated the claims after PlayStation 4 community members tweeted regarding this and he also shared a video. MVG removed the CMOS battery from a base PS4 and then downloaded the new 9.00 firmware update. He then disconnected the system from the internet once the update was successfully installed.

Earlier, players would immediately see a display error CE-30391-6 before a game and then the system would refuse to run any PS4 title. Post the new update, the console now manages to boot the game successfully and allows you to play it. As you can see in the video though, the earned PS4 trophy was not displaying.
