iPhone 15 could be getting another big upgrade to its camera system after the substantial one in iPhone 14 series. Earlier this year, Apple announced a brand new 48MP camera sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, promising better details and superior performance in low light. We tested out the camera in our full review and found it to perform better than its predecessor. However, Apple isn’t done with the improvement and it could introduce another big upgrade next year with the iPhone 15 series.

Based on a report from Nikkei, it is said that Sony’s new breakthrough image sensor will now be used on the iPhone 15 series. The new image sensor uses a novel way to place its photodiodes and transistors that allows it to capture more light. This could help Apple to solve its issues of overexposure and underexposure. For the layman, this could mean big gains in terms of low light photography and against bright light sources.

iPhone 15 series to get big camera upgrades

“Sony's new image sensor roughly doubles the saturation signal level in each pixel compared with conventional sensors. In other words, the sensors can capture more light and reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain settings, enabling a smartphone camera to clearly photograph a person's face even if the subject is standing against a strong backlight,” says the report.

This could help Apple to reduce the issue of overexposure in brightly lit environments, which is a big thing with the current generation of iPhone models. The new sensor could also help with low light videography, and lesser noise in other conditions.

What remains to be seen is whether Apple uses this sensor on all the iPhone 15 models, or reserves it for the Pro variants. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra are expected to feature all the big upgrades next year, with the latter having a periscopic lens for the zoom camera. It is expected that Apple could offer lossless optical zoom of up to 5X and build on its digital zoom to 10X in order to compete with Google Pixel 7 Pro.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could continue to use the older 48MP camera sensor from this year, and even borrow the Dynamic Island.
