Amidst all small asteroid flybys in the past few days, NASA has now warned that a colossal aircraft-sized asteroid is heading for Earth today. This asteroid has huge destructive potential due to its sheer size and speed and could potentially cause mass destruction. (Pixabay)

Although Earth is bombarded with asteroid flybys all year, none are potentially world-ending asteroids. That could change with a slight deflection in the asteroid’s trajectory due to interaction with Earth’s gravitational field which could send it tumbling towards Earth. (Pixabay)

NASA has warned that another asteroid is on its way towards Earth. The asteroid, named Asteroid 2017 VD15, will make its closest approach to the planet today, October 31, at a distance of 5.3 million kilometers. This 77 feet wide space rock is already speeding towards Earth at nearly 19152 kilometers per hour, which is nearly the speed of a hypersonic ballistic missile! (Pixabay)

According to the-sky.org, Asteroid 2017 VD15 was discovered on November 15, 2017. It is a bit different from the other asteroids as it belongs to the Amor group of asteroids. The asteroid takes 912 days to orbit the Sun during which its maximum distance from the Sun is 397 million kilometers and minimum distance is 153 million kilometers. (Pixabay)

NASA keeps a watch on these asteroids by studying data collected by various telescopes and observatories such as the Pan-STARRS, the Catalina Sky Survey and the NEOWISE telescope. NASA also has a NEO Surveyor mission planned for launch in 2026 to gain even greater in-depth data using a new orbiter. NASA can track the orbital path of the asteroid using this infrared data and can even predict its orbit years into the future. (NASA)
