The company announced the new feature as it said that it was also testing if the Messenger app could replace the user's default messaging app on a smartphone. It also said that the multiple-account update comes in the light of more and more people using shared devices.

Reportedly, the social network has confirmed that SMS tests were underway following reports of what appeared to be the return of SMS support in Messenger. The report also said that some users were able to see a new pane that allowed them to use the app as a default SMS client.

"At Messenger we are always trying to create new ways for people to communicate seamlessly with everyone," a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying. "Right now, we're testing the ability for people to easily bring all their conversations -- from SMS and Messenger -- to one place. It's a really simple way to get, see and respond to all your SMS messages in just one app. By choosing to access your SMS messages in Messenger, they're right alongside all the other enhanced features that Messenger offers."

Users also said that when the app was operating as a SMS client, the the prompt in the text input box would read "Write an SMS message." The messages sent as SMS texts would then appear as purple bubbles, instead of Messenger's usual blue.

The move can only be seen as another try to gain more traction than other rival messaging apps.
