Google Chrome has been the most popular browser in the world for a while now, with Apple’s Safari its closest competitor on all platforms except tablets. A new report suggests that Google’s popular web browser is being used by over 3.2 billion users around the world.

Chrome has grown in popularity since its debut in September 2018 with less than one percent market share — at the time, Firefox users made up a third of all users, while Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (which is set to be retired in 2022) was the dominant browser with over 60 percent market share. According to a report by AtlasVPN, Google’s browser is now being used by 3,25,82,56,887 users – or 41 percent of the population and over 60 percent of all devices.

Chrome surpassed all the other browsers at the time thanks to its lean design and low hardware footprint, which was a breath of fresh air at the time. However, that has changed over the past few years, with alternatives like Microsoft Edge and Firefox consuming far less RAM and CPU resources than Chrome.

However, the browser remains popular among users, thanks to its developer-friendly design as well as the quick software support. While Firefox still holds the title for the most private mainstream browser, Chrome is one of the most security-conscious browsers available today. Meanwhile, the dominance of Chrome on Android as the default browser definitely helps, as many users want to sync their bookmarks, history and passwords to and from their desktop.
