Reddit has reportedly shut down five forums as they were being used to harass individuals online.

A group administrator post said that the move was aimed at enabling authentic conversations and allowing people to share ideas and content on an open platform. The post added that the administrators wanted 'as little involvement as possible' in managing interactions but they will intervene when needed to 'protect privacy and free expression, and to prevent harassment,' reported The Verge.

The most prominent forum to be removed, which had over 5,000 subscribers, was a community devoted to overweight people, r/fatpeoplehate, featuring pictures for ridicule.

The clampdown followed an announcement in May where Reddit vowed to enforce its anti- harassment policy more vigorously.
