Last year, Oppo pulled off a mega surprise with the Enco X – an expensive pair of TWS earbuds that were tuned by Dynaudio to challenge the likes of the Apple AirPods Pro, and that too at a much lower price. The Enco X went on to be the benchmark for TWS earbuds under Rs. 10,000 and even to this date, these earbuds still hold their might. Oppo now comes with the Enco X2 earbuds as the successor, co-developed by Dynaudio once again. This time though, the promises are higher.

Hence, while the case may look familiar to the previous model, a lot of work has gone underneath. And as someone who used the Enco X for a long time, the Enco X2 certainly feels vastly improved, especially with the way it handles the audio balance. In fact, for a pair of TwS earbuds that costs Rs. 10,999, it seems like Oppo is losing some money on every pair they sell. Dive in for an in-depth outlook on the Oppo Enco X2.

Unlike dedicated audio brands like Sony and Sennheiser, Oppo has largely stuck to simpler and safe designs for its earbuds. Hence, the Enco X2 still looks like a clone of the Apple AirPods Pro – be it the case or the earbuds themselves. The case gets the familiar glossy pebble shape and there’s no metallic ring around the edges – the Dynaudio logo sits cleverly on the hinge. The battery status indicator sits alongside the USB-C port while the wireless charging coil is now on the “front side”, i.e., the face that lets you open the lid.

The earbuds themselves retain the same shape as before – compact and rounded with a short stem to hold the mic. The silicon eartips are more comfortable on the ear and so is the overall shape. The swipe gestures for volume control stay but the rest of the playback and call related functions are handled by “pinch” gestures – just like on the Apple AirPods Pro. These pinch gestures work well and actually work a lot better to prevent accidental dislodging of the earbuds.

Oppo Enco X2 Performance

You are spending a lot on these earbuds for good audio and it delivers the same. The original Oppo Enco X had impressed with a finely balanced audio signature that keeps the same focus on all frequencies. It lacked bass though and most users missed that. The Oppo Enco X2 brings just that – finely controlled bass to boost the lower frequencies and spice up the mids. Hence, the soundstage is still balances but I am able to feel the depth in the audio much better. In a song like “Watermelon Sugar”, the Enco X2 keeps instruments and the lower frequencies charged up with a tasteful amount of bass, all while keeping the mids clear and the highs loud and distortion free.

This kind of soundstage tuning is unheard of in the TWS earbuds category at this price. The Dynaudio tuning along with the 11mm and 6mm dual driver setup is key here. Moreover, if you do not prefer this setup, you can choose from four EQ presets tuned by Dynaudio. The standard setting is Dynaudio Real, and for more bass, you can choose Dynaudio Punchy. There’s even a Enco X Classic mode that dials down the bass for a more relaxed listening. Or, you can simply leave it on Dynaudio Simple & Clear and let everything sound joyous.

Keeping the audio experience great is the noise isolation arrangement. The silicon eartips provide good levels of passive noise isolation but with the ANC on, it cancels out even the faintest of sounds that seeps through. Be it a ceiling fan or the throaty exhaust note of a car, the Enco X2 keeps them at bay. The transparency mode is comfortable on the ears as well. The ANC never caused discomfort to the ears with a pressure build-up.

Oppo Enco X2 Smart features

All of the Enco X2’s smart features come from the Hey Melody app, which is available on both Android and iOS devices. I used the Enco X2 with the Nothing Phone (1) and I faced no issues with connection or pairing. Thanks to Google’s Fats Pair, the earbuds are identified by all Android devices registered to your Google account.

Coming back to the Hey Melody app, it lets you have a quick glance at the battery stats, although the Google Fast Pair notification also shows the same. Look below and you get to manually choose between ANC and Transparency mode. You can also choose the EQ presets from here that we discussed earlier. Oppo brings personalized tuning to the Enco X2 in terms of ANC and audio tuning. The “Personalised noise cancellation” lets the earbuds scan your auditory canal structure as well as the fit to offer a better isolation effect. The Golden Sound mode does the same for altering the way the sound is balanced. There’s also an earbuds fit test to help with a better seal!

The app lets you choose the audio codecs manually – LHDC, LDAC or AAC. The Game mode drops the latency by some margin to reduce the delay. Lastly, the Dual Connection feature makes it very convenient to manually pair the Enco X2 to two devices at the same time. The app also lets you customize the touch controls and even update the firmware.

Oppo Enco X2 Battery life

Oppo claims you can use these for audio playback at 6 hours at a stretch. Frankly, I was never able to exhaust the earbuds even with mixed use case of audio playback and calls. Note that I had left the codec setting to AAC and used the earbuds at 40 percent volume, with occasional ANC. I had to charge the case after 8 days. Charging the case takes just under 1.5 hours via a wired USB-C charger. There’s wireless charging too but note that you need to keep it on the charging pad with the Dynaudio logo facing upwards.

Verdict

There’s no other way to put it – the Oppo Enco X2 has left us impressed with its finely tuned audio signature and good noise cancellation performance. The Dynaudio tuning has taken care of bass, thereby keeping all kinds of listeners happy. Audiophiles may also like the soundstage on the Enco X2.

Other than the sound, the in-ear fit is excellent and thanks to a host of smart personalised tuning features via the Hey Melody app, you can truly tailor the earbuds to your liking. The battery life is great as well.

Hence, if you have Rs. 10,999 to spend on a pair of TWS earbuds and audio performance is a priority, look no further than the Oppo Enco X2.
