Here is why Gotham Knights does not have Batman
Wondering why Gotham Knights’ Batman is dead in the game? Here is what you need to know about the much-anticipated video game.
Gotham Knights has finally been unveiled. The new game the classic Batman Arkham series. One of the things that has gotten everyone talking is the premise of the game. If you have not seen the trailer yet, here is what you need to know – Gotham Knights' Batman is dead.
Gotham Knights focuses on events following the death of Batman. The heroes who step up their game are Robin, Red Hood, Nightwing, and Batgirl. Developer WB Games Montreal has explained why Gotham Knights does not feature Batman.
Speaking at DC Fandom, creative director Patrick Redding explained that they wanted Gotham to be without a safety net. He added that Gotham Knights' Batman is killed in an unexplained circumstance after keeping the city safe for about 15 years.
"We wanted to take away any certainty, any feeling of safety," Redding is quoted as saying. "So we could take a Gotham City where Bruce Wayne has been operating as Batman for, like, 15 years - with all that history, his whole network of allies - and then take him out of the picture. It really demands players figure out, 'How would I step up, and how would I protect Gotham City?'"
As IGN points out, Gotham Knights' trailer opens with a city in turmoil and taken over by super villains and criminals. The opening scene also confirmed Bruce Wayne's death. Interestingly, Wayne sends a message to his allies before dying. In the message, he hands over the responsibility of the safety of the city on Robin, Batgirl, and others.
That said, it will be interesting to see if fans will queue up to play a Batman game without Batman actually featuring in it.
Gotham Knights is set to release in 2021. The game will be available on all major platforms including PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC.
