Minecraft Basics: The very popular Minecraft game can be a bit tricky to understand early on. The sandbox game is very different from most games as it does not have a real objective and gives you an open, endless world where you can explore and build it up however you like. But to make the most of the Minecraft game, you need to understand its basics and that is what we aim to help you with through our Minecraft guide as you explore this online multiplayer game. Previously, we explained the basic controls and gameplay so if you have not checked it out, you can do so here. In this article, we will help you understand how to build a Minecraft shelter.

Minecraft Basics: How to build a Minecraft shelter

Shelters are very important, especially in the early stages of the game. The game world has a day-night system just like the real world. In the game clock, you get 10 mins of day time and 10 mins of night time, which makes one 24 hours real life cycle in 20 mins of in-game time. Now, the 10 mins of night time is very dangerous as this is when all the monsters come out and will try to kill you. And as you lack any advanced armors or weapons in the early days of the game, you need a shelter to protect yourself.

But before you build a shelter, you would require some items. So, we will go through the Minecraft list of items required to build a shelter in this Minecraft guide. You would need a pickaxe, a couple of torches and a door.

How to craft a Pickaxe

At this stage, either a wooden pickaxe or a stone pickaxe would work. To make a wooden pickaxe, you would need to add 3 wood planks and 2 sticks in the 3x3 crafting grid. To make a stone pickaxe, you would need 3 cobblestone or 3 blackstone and 2 sticks in the 3x3 crafting grid. Now, to make a pickaxe, you need to arrange the items in a specific order. Put the stone or wood planks in the top 3 grids. Next, add the sticks in the two slots in the middle column. The final arrangement should look like the letter ‘T'. Now craft, and you have your pickaxe ready to use.

How to craft a torch

To make a torch in Minecraft, you need to collect 1 coal or charcoal and 1 stick. Add them in the 3x3 crafting grid in the following pattern. The coal or charcoal will be placed in the 2nd box in the top row. The stick will be placed in the 2nd box in the middle row. Now craft, and you should have the torch ready to use.

How to craft a door

This Minecraft basics guide will help you in crafting a door. You would need 6 oak planks to build a door. You can easily make planks using blocks that you can get just by hitting a tree. Once you have the 6 oak planks, add them to the 3x3 crafting grid. Make sure to add them in the first and second column. Now craft, and you have your door ready to protect your shelter.

Now that you have all the necessary items required for building a shelter, check the Minecraft guide below to build your shelter and protect yourself from monsters at night.

How to build a Minecraft shelter

Step 1:

Find a mountain or a large rock that you can dig into using a pickaxe.

Step 2:

Dig a hole of the size of a door. This should be two blocks in height and one block wide. This is the entrance of your shelter.

Step 3:

Now tunnel into that hole and dig a large room. Once you dig deeper, you can make the ceiling higher and the space as wide as you want.

Step 4:

Once done, place torches on all of the walls to light up your shelter. This will also help in hostile mobs to not spawn inside your shelter.

Step 5:

Finally, add the door to the entrance. You can control the door by right clicking on your PC, using L1 on the console and just tapping on the door on iPhone and Android.

Step 6:

That’s it. Now you can place your items such as a crafting table, bed and other valuables inside the Minecraft shelter.
