iPhones in 2021 could come with in-screen Touch ID and Face ID both, according to WSJ report
Rumours about Apple putting together the Touch ID as well as the Face ID into an iPhone has been doing the rounds for a while now. A report from Bloomberg, published earlier this month, said that the 2021 iPhones might come with both these biometric authentication features. Now, a new report from WSJ has corroborated this as well, so it is likely that the iPhones we see this year might see the Touch ID joining the Face ID.
In September last year, Apple was granted a patent that covered in-screen Touch ID. But as patents stand, there are many that Apple holds covering this technology in particular dating right back to 2016, but we haven't seen the Cupertino-based tech giant actually putting them to use yet.
Reports suggest that 2021 could be the year that the under-display Touch ID and the Face ID comes to iPhones together.
Tipster L0vetodream had revealed in a tweet, back in October last year, that the feature (under-display Touch ID) would be coming to iPhones, but had not shared when that might happen.

This was followed by the Bloomberg report in mid-January this year that cited Apple engineers and reported that Apple was testing in-screen Touch ID for this year's iPhones. The report, however, had mentioned that it was unclear if the feature would end up making it to the production version of the devices.
WSJ's report cites two former Apple employees who has confirmed that the company has been “working on in-screen fingerprint technology and has considered including both Touch ID and Face ID on the same device”.
Apple is not expected to make any major changes to the iPhone lineup this year and the Touch ID and Face ID might just be the most notable upgrade. And it makes sense too with the world still trying to navigate around the pandemic and wearing masks, a Touch ID just makes lives a lot easier. Some other reports have suggested that Apple might remove the Lightning port for the first time this year, but this remains to be seen.
