Nothing Event: The company announced Nothing Phone 1 wrapped in Android-based Nothing OS for Summer 2022 (Nothing)

Nothing, the consumer tech platform, held its event today, March 23, where the cofounder Carl Pei announced that the company will enter the smartphone game in Summer 2022 and will launch Nothing Phone 1. Pei also announced that the smartphone will come along with in-house Android skin called Nothing OS. While many expected that the event would witness the launch of the smartphone, that wasn't the case. The 27-minutes long event focussed on the journey of the company in the past year and how it combined all the pieces – Team, Supply Chain and Capital – to build a product ecosystem which will deliver its first product this summer. But even as we did not see even a glimpse of the much anticipated Nothing Phone 1, there were some interesting tidbits teased. Read on to check out what they were.

The Nothing Event: Nothing Phone 1 and community investment

The biggest news coming from the event was that Nothing smartphones will be built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform, meaning it would most likely include a Snapdragon SoC. However, it was not revealed which chipset would be used. It was also revealed that the smartphone will be officially called the Nothing Phone 1, characterizing the company's minimalist aesthetics when it comes to naming conventions (remember Ear 1?). The smartphone is coming this summer, although a more pin-pointed date was not shared. It will be the company's next hardware launch, so no new earphones will be launched till then.

Pei also announced that Nothing has raised $144 million, put together a team of 300 people and partnered with big tech giants like Google, Samsung, Sony, Qualcomm and others. It also revealed that the company will have a $10 million allocation for an upcoming equity-based community investment round at the same valuation as its Series B fundraise, which was co-led by EQT Ventures and C Ventures. The company stated that the investment round will go live on April 5. Announcing the community investment round, Pei said he was doing it “so that our supporters get the chance to be part of our journey going head to head against the giants of the industry”.

Nothing Phone 1 to have Nothing OS

The company announced that it will be staying true to its vision of “an open and seamless ecosystem that will effortlessly connect and integrate Nothing products and products from other world-leading brands”. And as a part of that vision, it will be launching the Nothing OS, which will be a visually minimalist OS without any bloatware or pre-installed apps.

“Nothing OS captures the best features of pure Android, distilling the operating system to just the essentials, where every byte has a purpose. It is designed to deliver a fast, smooth and personal experience,” said the company. A first look of the OS will be available via its launcher for select smartphone models from April.
