Own an LG phone? Don’t worry, you will still get the Android 12 update despite operations shutting down
LG has announced that select smartphones will receive the Android 11 and the Android 12 update even though the company has shut down its mobile phones business.
South Korean LG Electronics recently announced that they are winding down their mobile division since they were running in losses. And in a follow-up, they've also mentioned that the successor to their rollable smartphone V60 will not be developed any further.
LG's last two high-profile launches were the rollable LG V60 and the dual-screen LG Wing.
This decision to shut down the mobile business makes LG the first major smartphone brand to completely withdraw from the market.
However, if you already own an LG device, do not despair. The company has updated their website for South Korea and has mentioned there that select LG smartphones will receive Android 11 and Android 12 as and when that rolls out.
LG has not mentioned though what smartphones will be receiving the update though since the roadmap of the Android OS update varies from market to market. And LG might also continue to roll out security updates as they've pointed out on the US-specific FAQ page.
LG is, however, infamous for rolling out Android updates late for its devices, including flagships. According to a Counterpoint report from 2020, LG was one of the slowest companies to roll out the Android 10 update. The report added that only 24% of LG smartphones sold between the third quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020 received the Android 10 update globally.
LG US told The Verge that the company “may offer certain OS upgrades for select models” and that “additional details will be provided in the near future on software updates”.
So for all the LG users out there, you'll get the updates. We just cannot tell you when.
