Samsung is not just known for its smartphones, but also for its well-saturated AMOLED screens. Last year we saw the company launch foldable handsets in the market, but soon it couldn't be joining LG and Oppo as it has confirmed its entry in the rollable display segment.

Confirmation comes from Samsung Displays' Senior Vice President Kwon-Young Choi during the earnings call (via Android Authority). In the call, Choi confirmed that the company will be fortifying their “presence in the display market, through innovative form factors such as rollable and sliding displays.”

Samsung has not yet confirmed the details or the fact that if these rollable or sliding screens will be for smartphones or any other device. However, the company filed a patent back in 2019 for a rollable phone that resembles the likes of Oppo and LG concepts that we have seen so far.

It's worth noting that the Korean smartphone maker has also filed patents in the past related to phones with sliding displays, something that Oppo has shown before as well. In particular, a patent filed in 2019 shows how the screen in a Samsung device can slide down and back, revealing the selfie camera, along with other sensors at the top.

It is also not yet confirmed if Samsung will be launching its own smartphones with rollable or sliding screens, or will it be making it for other manufacturers. For what's worth, Samsung is also one of the major screen suppliers for Apple's latest iPhones.

On a related note, LG showcased its first rollable phone at CES earlier this month. However, a recent report from Korean Herald suggests that this device might not see the light of the day anytime soon. LG has also confirmed that it is planning to sell the smartphone business to someone else, cut down on it or quit the segment completely.
