Many iPhone fans have wanted a USB type-C charging port on their device for years. While Apple has not come out with one so far despite many rumors, a YouTuber has now built an iPhone X that has it. And what's more, he also made it completely waterproof and staked a claim that his is the the world's first ever waterproof iPhone X with a USB type-C charger.
YouTuber and Modder Gernot Jöbstl has built this first of its kind iPhone X. Displaying his invention on YouTube, he uploaded a proof-of-concept video on the platform titled ‘World's first Waterproof USB-C iPhone' on January 13. In the video, Jöbstl kept the iPhone X with its display on under running water to demonstrate that it was indeed waterproof. True to his words, the iPhone worked perfectly fine even after its long shower. He also displayed the functional USB type-C port by connecting the phone to his laptop using a Type-C cable. Later in the video, he announced that he will be selling it on January 19 on eBay.
First ever waterproof iPhone X with USB type-C port: the timeline
While Jöbstl is credited with creating the world's first ever waterproof iPhone X, he is not the first one to come up with an iPhone with USB type-C port. In 2021, an engineer named Ken Phillonel created the world's first iPhone X with a USB type-C port and later sold it on eBay. Jöbstl admittedly relied on the files shared by Phillonel on GitHub to build his variant. Using that as a reference point, Jöbstl found an IPX8-rated water-resistant USB-C connector and added it to the iPhone.
His invention was not a smooth one, however. The YouTuber faced his share of challenges while making the iPhone X waterproof. He had to source the PD006 adaptor, replace the iPhone's mechanical structure with a carbon fiber body and used superglue to keep the wires and chipset together and waterproof. While the insides do not really look aesthetic, it definitely works.
Jöbstl has said in the video that he intends to sell the world's first ever waterproof iPhone X with USB type-C port on eBay on January 19. Selling the iPhone in an eBay style auction, he will take the auction live at 10:30 PM IST. He said that he will add the link to eBay's listing in the description of the YouTube video later.
