When Google wanted to make the app smarter, they made a completely new app altogether -- Inbox.
Gmail has joined Google Search, Android, Chrome, YouTube, Google Play and Google Maps in the billion user club offered by the Mountain View-based company that boast of more than one billion monthly active users.
The Gmail app faces off against Outlook and Yahoo! Mail in terms of functionality and purpose to offer mail services and capitalises on Google's search algorithms for a better organisation of mail.
One of the reasons that Gmail stays popular is sticking to basics. Over the years, mail applications have evolved to attracts more users but Gmail has stayed much the same on desktop and mobile.
