The news comes from Recode.net's sources, located within Amazon partner organizations, who see the device as a direct competitor to equivalent Apple TV and Roku set-top boxes.

And the company has been staffing up its games division, having most recently acquired video game studio Double Helix ('Strider' and 'Killer Instinct' remakes).

Illustrating the importance of online video to Elliot Bay's massive online retailer, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon subsidiary Netflix would be making payments to Comcast, in order to ensure that the video streaming service's content would 'stream smoothly to Comcast customers.'
