Your dream of getting the coveted blue check mark next to your name on Twitter could soon become a reality.
The microblogging-cum-social media portal on Tuesday announced that it has created an online application process for accounts to receive "verified status". Verified accounts on Twitter allow people to identify key individuals and organisations as authentic, and are denoted by a blue check mark icon.
Presently the only people flashing the "badge" are companies, celebrities, journalists, politicians and other high-profile figures, who are more likely to be impersonated. In all, only about 189,000 accounts out of the millions of its daily active users have been verified.
You can now join their ranks, provided you're able to answer a few questions and prove your identity.
The Twitter help page says, "We approve account types maintained by users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas."
But even if you fall within of those categories, the road to verification is not easy.
You will have to fill out a form with your personal details, and also explain why you should be verified. "If the account represents a person, we want to understand their impact in their field. If it represents a corporation or company, let us know their mission," the help page states.
You may also be asked to submit a scanned copy of a government-issued identity card for confirmation. And yet, the final decision lies with Twitter.

The application process started rolling out on Tuesday. Click Here to get started.
