After unveiling a marginally improved iPhone 4S in 2011, Apple seems to be ready to take the covers off the next model of iphone, or iPhone 5. According to rumours, the tech giant is expected to make the official announcement on September 12 with pre-orders going live the same day and a release on September 21. A new report by TechCrunch lends credibility to this date as it aligns with a Verizon vacation blackout from September 21st through 30th.

While rumours about the next Apple iPhone have been swirling around for months now, Apple has stayed tight-lipped, allowing the rumor mill to heat up.

For Apple fans, it's a time of immense excitement as they will be able to get their hands on the device in probably less than a month.

Apple's new iphone will most probably have a bigger screen. According to photos leaked on MacRumors.com, the diagonal measurement of the display on the new iPhone may increase from 3.5 inches to 4 inches. There're rumours that the iphone will be 10mm taller than the iPhone 4S, and about 2mm thinner.

In support of this information, a new Reuters report claims that that South Korean LCD panel maker LG Display has started producing new displays using the so-called in-cell technology that is widely expected to be used in Apple's upcoming iPhone iteration.

4G LTE
If rumours hold up to be true, the iPhone 5 will support the first 4G LTE network in the U.K. According to the Korea Times, Apple has been negotiating with two Korean mobile carriers to provide the iPhone 5 through their LTE networks. An executive with KT is quoted by the paper as saying, 'KT is in negotiation with Apple to persuade the latter to support KT's 1.8-gigahertz frequency in Korea for the upcoming iPhone', reports TechRadar.

Fingerprint sensor technology
Apple is reportedly very keen to incorporate finger sensing technology to go with its new digital wallet feature. In July, Apple acquired AuthenTec, a company that specializes in security systems such as fingerprint scanners. Tech blog Next Web speculated that this could have been because the tech giant wanted to add fingerprint scanners into the next iPhone, 'With Apple wanting to finalize the deal with a quickness, it would be easy to suggest that it was looking to incorporate AuthenTec's new technology in its upcoming products.

Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders to begin on Sept 12?

Leaning on reports of Apple's next-generation iPhone launching on September 12 and a 7.85-inch iPad following soon after - it would give Apple less than three months to embed this technology in its products)', said the blog.

Smaller dock
Apple will allegedly replace the 30-pin dock connector with a much smaller 19-pin dock connector to free up more space on the next generation iPhone. Tech blog iMore revealed, 'Apple is getting ready to ditch the dock connector as it's currently sized and implemented on iPods, iPhones, and iPads to save space inside the iPhone 5 for what are now more important components.

An updated 'micro dock' would make room for bigger batteries, 4G radios, and other iPhone and iPad components far more important in a PC free world'. In addition to these rumours, iLounge has recenlty posted an image of an Apple sync cable that almost confirms the rumour that the next iphone will have a new smaller dock connector. The changes will might frustrate consumers who have spent money collecting accessories such as speakers, cases and power chargers for their precious i-devices.'

Battery
In the past, Apple has tried to address the issue of quick battery discharge but rumours suggest that this time, it will be revealing a new battery with slightly higher capacity and voltage, which could help power the built-in 4G LTE.

Tech blog 9t5mac posted an image of what is purportedly the new battery, 'These new battery packs sport a higher capacity than the packs in previous generations of Apple's smartphone. This new battery features a capacity of 1440 mAh. That is up from the capacity of 1430 mAh on the iPhone 4S and up from 1420 mAh on the iPhone 4', the blog said.
