Apple to push the limits of screen resolution with an 8K iMac: Report

Apple is preparing to launch a new iMac with an unprecedented 8K screen resolution, according to a slip in a press release from LG, which supplies screens to the Cupertino firm. The release has been removed from LG's website but was republished by AppleInsider.

LG let the cat out of the bag in a release on recent progress in the field of 8K screens, stating that 'Apple has also announced that they will release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display later this year.' The computer in question would have 7680x4320 pixels. LG is indeed one of Apple's supply partners when it comes to screens.

A 5K iMac in 2014

The rumored iMac 8K would be the successor to the iMac 5K, which created quite a stir when it was launched in fall 2014. The all-in-one computer features a Retina screen with a record 5120x2880 pixels, four times the resolution of the standard 27-inch iMac.

Naturally, this high-definition screen offers an unprecedented level of detail for photo or video editing, and it also allows users to comfortably view multiple programs side by side. The iMac with 5K Retina display is available starting at $2,499. The current iMac range also still includes models with classic (non-Retina) displays of 27 inches (2560x1440 pixels) and 21.5 inches (1920x1080 pixels).

Apple is already something of a pioneer when it comes to high-definition screens on tablets, having released an iPad with a Retina screen (2048x1536 pixels) in 2012. The competition -- namely Samsung -- has caught up since then. The South Korean brand now sells 10-inch tablets with even more pixels (2560x1600).
