Website offers Mumbaikars opportunity to improve their karma at their convenience.
It began as a simple telephonic conversation between two friends on a mundane office day. One of them wanted to volunteer for a good cause and was discussing it with the other. They searched for the terms —'volunteering', 'helping', and 'assistance' over the Internet and found a lot of results that lead to complex websites. It was then they decided to start a simple portal that would help people volunteer without any complications. And the karmic wheel was in motion.
"Everybody has a streak of helpful nature, but many don't know how to proceed. There are people looking for ways to help out. We thought EarnKarma would connect individuals and organisations that require assistance with people who are looking to help them," says Ganesh Ramesh, co-founder.
Help wanted
Simply put, the website is an interface between people who need help and people who want to help. The search option is divided into categories. It includes country, state, city and the type of assistance one wants to provide or seek. For instance, if an organisation is conducting a medical camp in a village in Maharashtra and is looking for assistance from individual(s), the request can be posted on www.EarnKarma.org website. If this posting appeals to the visitor of the site, then they can contact the organisation through our site.
Your choice
People can also choose the type of volunteer work they want to be a part of. Options include mentoring, animal care, emergency services, human rights and community development among others. If you find a volunteering post that appeals to you, you can contact the organisation through the website. But you must be a registered user of EarnKarma in order to contact the organization.
Growing numbers
Since its launch, two years ago, there has been a lot of buzz around the site. The number of registrations and people posting volunteering opportunities has been steadily increasing. Currently, it has around 500 registrations, which include people and organisations. In the future, they intend to devote more time towards the development and marketing of this website, so that more people can easily utilise this platform to seek volunteering opportunities.
They are also working towards simplifying the flow of information on the site and making the registration and posting process straightforward."Apart from the backend enhancement, we want to reach out to as many non-profit/non-governmental organizations as possible and attract more visitors to our site. We hope to take EarnKarma to a level where it becomes synonymous with volunteering," says Ramesh.
