I did a detailed story on the same, explaining when the Dynamic Island works and does it drastically change the iPhone experience. It is indeed interesting to look; it is as if there is a living organism hiding the camera holes while serving notifications. However, as the charm of the new phone wears out, the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island doesn’t feel as special as it used to. And no, it is not due to me getting used to it. It solves an issue that Apple created after deciding to part ways with the notch – to hide the TrueDepth camera system. Still, it tries to make some use of the dead space that Android phones have been dealing with for years. And now that the Dynamic Island has created a buzz, Android phone makers are considering copying it. Developers have already started making app to replicate the same on Android phones. However, I genuinely wish no Android phone manufacturer copies it and I can state five good reasons for it. No difference in summoning Control Center and Using Dynamic Island The Dynamic Island extends quick controls for music or other live apps running in the background. However, you still have to long-press it to open up the controls. On both Android and iOS, it is much easier to swipe down the control panel for managing the same functions. And, it is now a part of our muscle memory. 2. Android already has floating notifications Android phones have long had the concept of floating notifications, or push messages. Hence, when you connect your wireless earbuds, or some background process gets completed, Android phones notify it with an overlay message. The Dynamic Island on iPhones does not do that yet. 3. Samsung phones already have something similar for years Samsung’s One UI interface has long shown notification in an island style pop-out. No, it does not let you control music playback but messages and notifications on Samsung devices are delivered in an island style overlay. And with Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung offers an even better solution – an active taskbar to host important apps as well as switch between your favourite ones. 4. Won’t look good on single punch-hole cutout design The Dynamic Island appeals because it has a wide array of sensors to hide. On Android phones with single camera cutouts, this would look odd. Wide pill-shaped camera cutouts have gone out of fashion and a software based solution to replicate the same would look odd. The notification bar on Android can already show more information than what iOS can achieve on the new iPhones. But the next point makes a solid case against it. 5. The future is under-display camera We already know of a few flagship phones successfully masking their camera cutouts under the display. Going forward, this tech is going to get cheaper and be widely adopted by more smartphones. Having a big black pill sitting for no reason on the notification bar makes no sense then, does it? Even Apple might ditch it once it has the technology to hide the front camera and the Face ID sensors.
