'F1 2013' brings back the '80s

The best of 1980s Formula One racing is to be included in the "F1 2013" video game, alongside the racer's various improvements based upon the current season.

The best of 1980s Formula One racing is to be included in the 'F1 2013' video game, alongside the racer's various improvements based upon the current season.


There'll be a selection of 1980s drivers, cars, and circuits celebrating a previous era's accomplishments, with the Brands Hatch and Circuito de Jerez courses confirmed.

Also named in the announcement from game developer Codemasters are legendary drivers Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi and Gerhard Berger, with the Williams, Lotus and Ferrari teams also namechecked.

What previously might have been a Special Edition is now the Classic Edition, which gives owners early access to 1990s drivers, cars and circuits before they are made available for purchase as post-release content.

Examples given were David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve, Eddie Irvine and Alain Prost, with Williams and Ferrari providing the machinery and Imola and Estoril circuits also named.

The focus on previous sporting legends echoes that of recent entries in the 'NBA 2K' basketball series, whose 'NBA 2K10' allowed players to recreate the career of Michael Jordan or take control of contemporary athletes.

As well as a teaser trailer embedded on the game's website, featuring commentator Murray Walker, Codemasters also released hotlap trailers for the Nürburgring and Silverstone circuits, illustrating its ongoing commitment to modern day motorsport thrills.

'F1 2013' has been announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PCs later this year -- platforms upon which it will in 2014 face competition from multi-disciplinary racer 'Project CARS.'
