Forget Hubble Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, THIS new one will beat them hollow

The iconic Hubble Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope will be roundly beaten by the new Giant Magellan Telescope. It is expected to be 4 times more powerful than the James Webb Telescope.

2/5 The image was captured by the James Webb Space Telescope’s Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and MIRI instrument. It showed individual stars within the star-forming regions in the outer ring of the Cartwheel galaxy. It also shows clusters of very young stars around the galaxy's central supermassive black hole shrouded in dust. (NASA)

3/5 The Cartwheel galaxy is located in the constellation Sculptor, around 500 million light years away from Earth. According to the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), the galaxy’s shape was developed because of a head-on collision between 2 galaxies which created 2 rings from the galaxy’s center like "like ripples in a pond after a stone is tossed into it.” (AFP)

4/5 The stunning image captured by telescope showed areas rich in hydrocarbons and silicate dust, connecting the inner and outer ring of the galaxy. The Hubble Telescope had also earlier captured the Cartwheel, but it was a mystery due to the amount of dust that hinders the view. The new $10 billion telescope makes these features much easier to distinguish and study. (ESA/Hubble)

Hubble Telescope has been in Earth orbit for years and James Webb Space Telescope has taken position in Sun's orbit just recently. Both these telescopes have astonished the world with their capabilities. In fact, the new James Webb Telescope has, within a month, captured the oldest ever galaxy, broke its own record a week later when it found an even older galaxy and has even captured the stunning Andromeda Galaxy in extreme detail. But now, both these telescopes are facing competition from an under-construction telescope. This new telescope could make the James Webb Telescope look like binoculars and so you can imagine how badly the Hubble Telescope will fare against it.

This hugely powerful telescope is the Giant Magellan Telescope. And it will not even have to be flown into space! It will be a ground-based telescope in Las Campanas Peak at the southern edge of Chile's Atacama Desert. It is expected to become fully functional by the end of the year 2030.

According to giantmagellan.org, the Giant Magellan Telescope is the most powerful telescope on Earth. It is designed to discover the unknown. With unmatched image quality, seven of the world's largest mirrors will launch the view into the Universe to find Earth-like planets and search for signs of life and take a peek back in cosmic time to explore the formation of the first stars, galaxies, and black holes.

However, the Giant Magellan telescope is not supposed to be a competitor of the Hubble Telescope or the James Webb Space Telescope. Instead, with its high contrast cameras, excellent spectrographs and unprecedented angular resolution, it is expected to work in conjunction with the JWST to make discoveries of the unknown. The Giant Magellan telescope can fit up to 10 scientific instruments, making it the only telescope in the world to do so.

The Giant Magellan Telescope is the work of a group called GMTO Corporation which is an international consortium of leading universities and research institutions from the United States, South Korea, Israel, Brazil, and Australia.
