They made up 32% of the most popular Android apps in Beijing-based start-up APUS's report on global mobile applications, published on Monday.

Second in the ranking were communications category applications, which comprised 19% of the most popular apps.

Not far behind were tools and utility apps, which made up 13% of the most popular.

Social networking apps came in, somewhat surprisingly, in fourth place, comprising 11% of the most popular apps.
