Get a new address

Creating an email address for your blog can help you reach out to your readers and organise things better.

A lot of people email me every day, and not all on my official address either. A couple of years ago, when people wanted to talk about more than just the content of my blog, they began to ask for my email address. At this point, I was maintaining some amount of anonymity, so I didn't like to give anyone my 'real' email address. What was I to do? Well, create a separate email address for my blog, of course. From then on, my life got (a little) easier.

Make your blog email address snappy and to the point, but don't make it your URL unless you can't help it. For instance, I blog under the name 'eM' which won't make a valid email address, so I use my blog address as an email moniker: . It works, because 'The Compulsive Confessor' is not short, but it's snappy, and easy to remember. If my address was longer, like 'The Compulsive Confessor Rambles Randomly', I would knock off the 'The' and the 'Rambles Randomly' to make it simple. See? You just need to use your keywords.

Why have a separate address?

I'll give you a couple of reasons:
You want your blog stuff and your other stuff to be separate. You really don't want that email from your cousin in the same inbox as one from your blog reader asking for the best way to remove coffee stains from clothing.

You might have an anonymous blog too. And sometimes, things go deeper than just the comments section. If you want to argue at length, or someone wants to send you a three para-long thing on why you're wrong, the best place to do it is via email. And not one that can be traced back to your job either.

You can redirect email from your blog address to your primary address. This is what I do. But then, I can also see which emails have been sent to the blog and which haven't. This makes it easier to label my emails and reach them quicker when I'm looking.

You want a better, deeper interaction with your readers. This is important. You can make many good friends (and enemies) off the Internet. What better way to talk to your reader in Canada than privately and meaningfully?

Everything you get in your email is fair game to be posted on your blog, unless specified otherwise by the sender. Just to be on the safe side, when I get an email that I want to post, I write to the sender informing them of this, and get their permission. People realise that I might post their emails and sometimes send me disclaimers saying their email is off the record. If you don't have a blog email, you're losing out on a goldmine of post material.

Enough reasons? Go, get your very own email address now! Don't forget to link to it prominently so that people know how to reach you. Happy communicating!
