Google has finally added support for redeemable promo codes on the PlayStore for apps and games, something which Apple has been offering for quite some time on its App Store. With Google now adding support for these codes, it implies that developers can now offer Android users a paid app or in-app purchases for free with the introduction of these promo codes.
Google further adds on its Developer site that the new feature has certain limits. For instance, only 500 promo codes per app can be issued by developers in a single quarter, while the number of unused codes won't be valid in the next quarter. More information about the feature has been explained on the company's help pages.
"Promo codes let you give content or features away to a limited number of users free of charge. Once you create a promo code, you can distribute it subject to the terms of service. The user enters the promo code in your app or in the Play Store app, and gets the item at no cost. You can use promo codes in many ways to creatively engage with users," wrote the company on its Developer page.
Developers can essentially offer codes for any paid app/game, along with in-app purchases. Though they will not be allowed to create codes for content that requires subscriptions. In addition, developers also get the option to set expiry dates for their promo codes or halt the promotion.
It took the search engine giant rather long to introduce these promo codes. Nonetheless, promo code support is here now which is certainly good news for Android developers as well as users.
