The Device Protection feature is Google's answer to Apple's Activation Lock and works on the same anti-theft idea. It basically makes stolen phones 'useless' to whoever took it. The feature will keep your stolen device locked unless you sign in with your Google account, even if someone resets your device to factory settings.
