Google working on new gaming service ‘Yeti’, along with hardware: Report

Google’s gaming streaming service has reportedly been in the works for two years now.

Google could be joining the gaming scene. Google is reportedly working on a gaming streaming service called 'Yeti'.

This service is said to be bundled with an in-house gaming console or on its existing Chromecast device, according to a report by The Information (via ArsTechnica).

Google's latest development raises a lot of questions in terms of software and hardware. At present, the gaming world is ruled by Sony and Microsoft with their PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Both the companies also have their own gaming streaming services - PlayStation Now and Xbox Live. These services are subscription based and come with validity of one year. While you do get some free games along with the subscription, you still have to purchase most of the games.

How these services help is that you create your own PlayStation or Xbox account and upload your games on the cloud according to the storage you have which is either 500GB or 1TB. At the same time, these games also come with exclusivity. Sony has its own exclusive games, and Xbox has their own.

Taking all these things into consideration, it's quite interesting to see how Google aims to deliver their product. Google's Yeti project is being headed by Mario Queiroz who is VP of product management, and Majd Bakar, VP of engineering. The possibility of this gaming service being bundled with Chromecast seems unlikely as the device doesn't come close to a gaming console.

However, Google could develop a gaming console on its Chromecast device to possibly offer a universal platform. That's thinking too far ahead though. Google could also build its own gaming hardware which would be even more exciting. PlayStation and Xbox gamers currently face the problem of games being exclusive to each console. It's interesting to see how Google will create a level playing field for gamers.

Google's Yeti project has reportedly been in development for almost two years now with an expected release slated for 2017. However, the project never took off.
