A ration card is one of the most important pieces of documents that one can have. It not only provides proof of residence but also of citizenship. In addition to that, the Ration Card also serves as a food coupon. People who have a Ration Card get subsidies on the purchase of various commodities such as wheat, rice, sugar and kerosene among other things.

Ration Cards are provided by the Public Distribution System and it is provided by the state government. They are usually printed booklets. And while a switch to digital ration cards has not happened pan-India yet, a number of states like Delhi let their citizens apply for ration cards online.

Types of Ration Cards

BPL Cards: BPL or Below Poverty Line Card is provided to the citizens who live below the poverty line and their annual income is less than 10,000.

APL Cards: APL or Above Poverty Line Card is provided to the citizens who are above the poverty line and their annual income is above 10,000.

AAY Cards: AAY or Antyodaya Anna Yojana Card is issued to the citizens who do not have any stable income source.

Who can apply for a Ration Card

Any person who is living in India who has not already applied for or is in possession of such a card. Alternatively, a couple who got married in a particular state can also apply for a ration card in that particular state.

What are the documents required

Here are all the documents required for applying for a ration card:

-- Proof of identity (Voter ID, PAN card, passport)

-- Proof of residence (Aadhaar card, LPG connection, electricity bill, telephone bill, house agreement)

-- A self-addressed and stamped postal cover or postcard.

-- Passports-sized photographs

-- Mobile number

-- Email ID

How to apply for a ration card online in Delhi

Ration Cards, as mentioned before, are provided by the state government. And so, people need to apply for ration cards on the PDS of their respective states. Here, we'll consider the example of Delhi.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Visit the official website of the Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs, GNCT of Delhi Government.

Step 2: Log in to the portal to apply.

Step 3: Now click on the application form for getting food security under the NFSA 2013.

Step 4: Fill in all the mandatory fields in the application form and upload all the documents.

Step 5: Click on the Apply Online button.

How to download e-ration card

Here's how you can download the e-ration card:

Step 1: Go to the Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs, GNCT of Delhi Government's website.

Step 2: Fill in all the details such as ration card number, name of head of the family, Aadhaar card number of the head of the family, DoB and registration mobile number.

Step 3: Users will get an OTP on the registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and the base number.

Step 4: Now you will be able to download e-Ration Card in PDF format.
