1. Walk short distances.

2. Cycle, instead of using the car. Join a group such as Noida Cycling Club (9958 703615), Delhi Cycling Club (9990226644), DelhibyCycle (9811723720) etc and then cycle to work if you can.

3. Use public transport. Support campaigns that advocate their use. Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has campaigns promoting the use of public transport and against air pollution. Contrary to popular perception, most Delhi-ites walk or cycle. Even with only 14% car ridership, the city is gridlocked. More cars will increase congestion. Parking adds to the city's woes with public parking using nearly 10% of Delhi's urbanised land.

4. Car pool, if you have to use the car.

5. Switch off the vehicle's ignition at traffic intersections.

6. Print less, save paper.

7. Use Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and not incandescent bulbs. CFLs use a fifth to a third of the electric power compared to incandescent bulbs and last about 10 times longer.

8. Dry clothes on the clothesline instead of using the dryer. We get enough sun.

9. Go for energy-efficient appliances. Appliances now come with ratings on energy efficiency. This is meant to help the consumer make an informed choice about how much energy they can save.

10. Say no to stand-by mode in appliances. Switch off when not in use. Same goes for computers and laptops.
