India has become the first overseas market for the dating app to launch its operations outside US and the company has appointed Taru Kapoor as the head of its operations.
Kapoor will be operating out of Delhi and is currently charged with establishing the Tinder brand in India, growing user base and user engagement.
The dating app was launched in 2010 in Los Angeles, California and its board of directors include Sean Rad, founder and CEO Matt Cohler, general partner at Benchmark; Greg Blatt, chairman of Match Group; and Sam Yagan, CEO of Match Group.
The app works in 196 countries and is among the top lifestyle app in more than 70 countries. In 2015, the company announced premium features under its Tinder Plus feature that allows users some cool buttons making social dating easier.
"We have exciting plans for Tinder in 2016 and having Taru on board is a step towards making India one of our core markets. Taru's passion for Tinder and understanding of the Indian market makes us even more confident in our plans to expand in India," Tinder CEO Rad said.
Kapoor, who is taking on the India reins, is a Harvard MBA graduate and was an active member of start-ups and VC community in Harvard Business School. She has extensive experience in business development, product and growth strategy and financial modelling and planning. She previously worked with The Boston Consulting Group and Sequoia Capital India.
"Being part of a young brand like Tinder is both exciting and challenging. Tinder is already the market leader here without significant focussed efforts in the past and the future potential here is astounding. I am thrilled to be given the responsibility to take this brand to India, which we all know is among the largest, most dynamic and vibrant populations in the world," Kapoor said about the company after her appointment.
