India's internet speed lowest in Asia, way below global average

At 1.7 Megabits per second (Mbps), India internet speed is not only way below the global average of 3.9 Mbps but also the slowest in Asia, a report says.
According to Akamai's latest, quarterly 'State of the Internet' report, India came in last among the 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
When compared with an average internet connection speed of 23.7 Mbps in South Korea, it appears Indian internet users are getting a raw deal. In China, surfers get double the Indian average speed.
Also, India's average peak connection speed declined by 1.5% in the first quarter.
The report says South Korea, Japan (14.6 Mbps) and Hong Kong (13.3 Mbps) maintained 'their solid lead in the average connection speed metric both globally (taking the top three slots) and within the Asia Pacific region'.
'South Korea led as the only country with an average connection speed above 20 Mbps, while Japan and Hong Kong were the only two with average connection speeds above 10 Mbps,' the report further said.
'Given the long-term trending seen for this metric, it is likely that the global average connection speed will finally reach and hopefully surpass the 4 Mbps broadband threshold in the second quarter,' said the report from the US company which provides content distribution and security as well as cloud software.
Since India's speed only rose by 8% compared to last year's figure, it is unlikely that it will catch up with most Asian countries that saw their average connections speeds jump by more than 20%.
Across the region, the report said, quarterly changes ranged from 2.6% in Australia up to an impressive 46% in Indonesia; Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan joined Indonesia in seeing quarterly increases above 10%.
