Pushing its Unreal Engine 4 technology at the Game Developers Conference was Epic Games, with an impressive real-time demo rammed full of special effects.

Previous years have seen Epic show off its technology with the 'Samaritan' and 'Elemental' demonstrations, set in a cyberpunk dystopia and fantasy realm respectively, but 'Infiltrator' is a guns-blazing romp through a science-fiction future.

Epic has become well known for its 'Gears of War' series on Xbox 360 and, more recently, the 'Infinity Blade' games on iOS.

But since mid-2012, when Chinese investment company Tencent acquired a large stake in the company, several influential employees have left leading to speculation that

Epic will be concentrating on supporting the Unreal Engine rather than developing further game franchises itself.

The 'BioShock,' 'Borderlands,' 'Batman: Arkham,' 'Mass Effect' and recent 'Transformers' series are all among those that run on earlier iterations of the engine.
