Intel shows smartphone urgency with Google tieup

With an aim to expand its presence in the computing world, technology giant Intel on Wednesday announced a partnership with Internet search giant Google in its smartphone foray.

With an aim to expand its presence in the computing world, technology giant Intel on Wednesday announced a partnership with Internet search giant Google in its smartphone foray.

It has also promised to bring power-efficient and affordable 'ultrabooks', a sleeker and lighter version of laptops, to the market this holiday season.

Announcing the Google partnership, Intel president and CEO Paul Otellini said smartphones based on Intel's technology would be launched in the market by the first half of 2012.

Intel, the leading player in making chips for PCs, has been a late entrant in the smartphone market, and rivals such Qualcomm and AMD have established their roots.

Otellini also announced that Intel's engineers were working on a new class of platform power management for the ultrabooks that enable "always-on-always-connected computing" with upto 10 days of standby on a single charge, and in standby mode, keep e-mail, social media and digital content up-to-date.
