Is Facebook calling you a stalker?
Imagine the humiliation of finding your name among 20 of those who have been frequenting your ex-girlfriend’s Facebook profile.
Imagine the humiliation of finding your name among 20 of those who have been frequenting your ex-girlfriend's Facebook profile. No wonder then, Facebook's latest application, 'Who is viewing my profile?', is inviting the wrath of users who are creating hate groups by the dozen to stall it.
Launched two months ago, the application has left Facebook users paranoid, as they increasingly find themselves tagged as "Profile Visitors" of several accounts. While the application claims that only those who activate it can be traced, a flaw in the design has made stalkers even out of non-visitors.
Ranjan Sharma, 28, ad executive, swears that he neither visited his ex-girlfriend's profile, nor did he activate the application. "She's put up a collage of people who have apparently been on her page and I'm among them! Now everyone thinks I'm a stalker," says Sharma. Corporate manager Neha Saini says, "It seems I'm visiting profiles all day because I got tagged in 10 such trackers.
They aren't alone, the application already has over 20 hate groups — 'I don't want to know who is viewing my profile 24/7', 'Group Against Who Is Viewing My Profile', 'I Don't Give a Monkey Who Is Viewing My Profile' and 'I Don't Give A Rat's Ass Who is Viewing My Profile', to name a few.
A group, 'I don't care who's viewing my profile! so stop spamming me!' has 678 members, and claims that the application is faulty. Another has 500 members and says that the application violates privacy. "This is the embarrassment that killed Orkut!" says one user.
