The racing game has become the fastest selling Wii U title so far, selling 1.2 million copies worldwide since its release on Friday, May 30, Nintendo UK announced Monday on Twitter (@NintendoUK).

Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the eighth version of 'Mario Kart' is flying off the shelves. With its debut on the Wii U, the franchise sold over 1 million copies in the first few days following its launch. The game's sales figures are especially impressive when compared to sales of the Nintendo Wii U console, which total 6.15 million.

Nintendo, which has seen its once immense popularity among gamers decline recently, is likely basking in the success of its new game. The Japanese company should now have a little more peace of mind when looking ahead to the E3 video game conference (June 10-12 in Los Angeles), where it is expected to reveal additional details on 'Super Smash Bros,' its next potential best-seller.
