The Motorola Razr and Razr 5G had dominated headlines in 2020 for bringing back the iconic “flip phone” form factor to the market. However, the unmistakable Razr looks, a clean software, and a large Cover display couldn't offset its exorbitant price tag and a much cheaper Galaxy Z Flip. With Samsung dominating the foldable market, Motorola is set to bring back the Razr in its third-gen avatar, called the Razr 3.

The Razr 3 is currently said to be under development, as hinted by a Weibo post made by Lenovo Executive Chen Jin. Jin says that the Razr 3 will come with a better design than the older models. Additionally, Motorola will offer improved performance and a tweaked user interface. The phone is most likely to debut in China.

Motorola Razr 3 in the pipeline

Motorola had previously hinted at bringing no Razr foldable in 2021, with rumours suggesting that it wants to get it right with the third generation model. The first gen Razr launched in 2019 and while it was nostalgic reminder of the original Razr flip phone from 2004, it wasn't very practical. It had an underpowered chipset for a flagship phone, had questionable build quality, and a delicate foldable display.

Motorola fixed most of the issues with the Razr 5G launched in 2020. It even got 5G courtesy of the Snapdragon 765G, more RAM and storage, and more polish everywhere. However, it was too expensive in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, which was unarguably a much better smartphone.

The Razr 3 has a lot on its shoulders given the current status of the folding smartphone market. Samsung now dominates the folding smartphone space while Oppo has already shown a very competent first-gen foldable in the Oppo Find N. Xiaomi sells a folding phone in China and while Huawei dominates the space in China, Honor is set to announce its first folding phone.
