MWC 2018: LG V30 2018 edition to debut with Vision AI, Voice AI capabilities

LG on Tuesday announced that it will be showcasing new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on the upgraded 2018 version of its flagship smartphone V30 at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, scheduled to take place in Barcelona, Spain from February 26 to March 1.

LG's latest AI technologies focus on two smartphone features - camera and voice recognition. LG will roll out these features for existing smartphones through Over-The-Air (OTA) updates.

Vision AI

Vision AI on LG V30 will give suggestions on how to use the smartphone's camera like choosing the best picture mode including portrait, food, pet, landscape and more. Using AI, LG V30's camera will be able to detect the object being shot and accordingly suggest the required mode.

Vision AI's second feature is using the camera to give "shopping advice." You can scan QR codes of clothes and shoes and the smartphone will automatically do an image search. It will also show options of places where the product can be purchasing providing the lowest price possibilities, and also similar products. A similar functionality seen on Samsung's recent Galaxy On7 Prime smartphone and Motorola's X4.

Already, Google is offering the same through its Lens whereas Samsung has integrated it within Bixby virtual assistant. Google Lens on the Pixel devices scans objects like business cards, books, landmarks and provides information accordingly. Samsung Bixby has a closer comparison as it also gives shopping advice.

Lastly, LG V30's camera will get a new low-light shooting mode with Vision AI. This feature will differ from existing ones as Vision AI will measure the brightness of the actual photo and adjust the brightness levels accordingly, LG says.

Voice AI

With Voice AI, LG is adding nine more Google Assistant commands on LG V30 in addition to the existing 23. The LG-exclusive AI commands are all functions for the smartphone camera. The new commands that are being added under Voice AI include the following - Panoramic Photo, Food Photo, Time-lapse Photo (Video), Slow-motion Video, Low-light Photo, AI Cam Photo, Image Search, QR Code Scanning, and Shopping Search. These voice commands are essentially extensions of the new Vision AI features arriving on LG V30.

LG V30's specifications are still in the rumor stage. What's confirmed is a dual-camera setup on the smartphone. The smartphone is also expected to launch with the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, and offer up to 256GB of internal storage. The upgrades would naturally be higher than the existing LG V30 but it's best to wait till the official launch.
