New iOS icons are dropping some hints about what Apple’s upcoming design language might look like on iOS 15
Apple is inching towards a new design language and some new icons have been spotted that gives us a look at what things might look like in the future.
Apple is working on a new design language and we possibly have some idea about what it might look like in the future thanks to a few new iOS icons. For example, look at the updated design of the Apple Music for Artists app logo:
As The Next Web reports, this particular new iOS icon was first spotted by a Reddit user called DimVI and it “appears to mimic” some of the design language we've seen on the Big Sur. The emphasis seems to be on icons with greater depth and you can “see the shadowing of the double quaver giving the new app logo a more three-dimensional look”.
While one cannot say for certain that this IS exactly how the new iOS icons are going to look like or if this is the future of Apple's new design language, this is not the first evidence we have of the fact that there is a shift in process. As spotted by MacRumours last year, Apple did something similar with the App Store Connect logo.

Looking at both these icons, one can predict that this is what iOS 15 might look like. As TNW points out, this design approach is not “technically neumorphic” but Apple is “clearly taking some cues” from that school of thought. The idea seems to be to move away from a flat design, that we've been seeing for years now, towards icons that have more depth and body.
The colour scheme for the new logos is also interesting. The App Store Connect logo has the same background, the Apple Music for Artists logo has changed to a white. This dark mode functionality could possibly be explained by the idea that the background of the icons can switch to black when it is enabled.
While Apple is schedueld fo a design change with iOS 15, there is no saying for certain that these two logos we've shown you today are clear indications of what might come. We'll have to wait and watch.
