NFS Shift 2: Unleashed

The gameplay is easy. The game begins with auto-acceleration, steering assist, and break assist cranked all the way up. After changing the controls to allow for some challenge, the tracks aren’t too difficult to navigate, so driving through a race just feels like you’re going through the motions. You would expect a graphics increase with more powerful devices since the original Shift was released, but there is really nothing noteworthy.

Electronic Arts' newest game from their Need for Speed series, Shift 2: Unleashed, released on August 4. The game is more of an upgrade to Need for Speed Shift which has been removed from the App Store for the updated Shift 2.

There are over 40 unlockable cars and 20 Quick Race Trials with some of the most well known powerful cars available. Select a race, win and earn money. Use the money earned to upgrade your existing car or to buy a new one. If you are a speed machine, EA has provided an in-app purchases, to buy money ranging from $0.99 for game-money $300,000 to $9.99 for game-money worth $10,000,000 and many more. But then again you can go the traditional way of winning a lot more races and then upgrading your car or buying a new one. There are also three new locations added with Black Forest, Abu Dhabi, and Rio, which were not part of Shift

The gameplay is easy. The game begins with auto-acceleration, steering assist, and break assist cranked all the way up. After changing the controls to allow for some challenge, the tracks aren't too difficult to navigate, so driving through a race just feels like you're going through the motions. You would expect a graphics increase with more powerful devices since the original Shift was released, but there is really nothing noteworthy. Only addition is the vibration mode once you crash into an opponent, but then again haven't we already seen and felt that.

EA also is trying to add in Origin, which is their own Social gaming service, as if there weren't enough already. Origin doesn't add anything to the game except annoying pop-ups. You need to add your friends to the new service, as it doesn't connect to Game Center in any way. Also, there are no online leaderboards at the moment, and you can only compare scores with Origin friends. If that wasn't enough, there's no online multiplayer, and just local WiFi multiplayer, where as Real Racing 2 provides a full online Multiplayer.

Another potential downside is the music. It's cool that it's always playing, no matter whether you're in the middle of a race, buying new upgrades for your car, or watching a loading screen. Unfortunately, the songs are all generic rock tunes that repeat too quickly. Thankfully, you can turn down the volume of the music in the options menu.

Shift 2 Unleashed ($4.99, iPhone / $6.99, iPad) is unthrilling to say the least, and Hot Pursuit and Underground is far better. The most glaring negative is the basic gameplay that lacks action, challenge, and anything that will engage you. Not worth the money. Hope to see improvements in the forthcoming updates of Shift 2.
