Now, an app to locate condom stores
According to Unicef, 5 million young people are living with HIV. MTV's Staying Alive Campaign steps up with iCondom iPhone app helping you locate the nearest condom store.
Now that MTV has partnered with iCondom there's no need to go looking around in your 'hour of need' or take a risk and 'just wing it.'
The iCondom iPhone app, a geo-aware crowd sourcing app, will tell you where the nearest condom vending shop is.
The app allows the user to GPS search for the nearest location, while most of the detailed information will be user generated.
As part of MTV's Staying Alive Campaign, the app was launched with the objective of removing the taboo around buying contraceptives. The aim of the campaign, started by Scarlett Mark, is to prevent the spread of HIV among young people.
There's a growing debate around the efficacy of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, since condoms are more efficient at preventing pregnancy.
The information garnered by the app will be used to create a global condom distribution map in the future.
Users will be continually encouraged to upgrade the information, such as whether the store is open 24 hours and the nearest alternative, provided by the app.
The app is free to download. Any ad revenue generated would be split between Staying Alive, the developers of iCondom and Scarlett Mark.
