Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021 is scheduled to take place between June 28 and July 1 in Barcelona, Spain. Ahead of the annual event, a number of tech companies including Google, Oracle, Sony, Nokia and Ericsson have pulled out of having an in-person event. The latest company to join this bandwagon is Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has pulled out of having an in-person event owing to concerns regarding the pandemic. The chipmaker, in a statement to TechCrunch, said that instead of hosting an on-ground event, the company will be hosting an event virtually.

“While we appreciate the health and safety measures being put into place by the GSMA for MWC Barcelona, we have decided that it is in the best interest of our employees and customers for Qualcomm's participation to be virtual this year,” a Qualcomm spokesperson told the publication.

“We look forward to engaging with the ecosystem through Cristiano Amon's virtual keynote on June 28th and through our latest announcements and 5G demonstrations,” the spokesperson added.

It is worth noting that the development comes a day after Samsung announced that it was pulling out of the in-person annual event. The company said that it would participate in the event virtually instead. “The health and safety of our employees, partners and customers is our number one priority, so we have made the decision to withdraw from exhibiting in-person at this year's MWC,” the company had said in a statement to The Korea Herald.
