Influential technology blog, GigaOm, started in 2001 by Indian-American Om Malik, is shutting down. GigaOm was among the top 50 blogs worldwide according to Technorati, a leading publisher advertising platform that ranks websites.
'Gigaom is winding down and its assets are now controlled by the company's lenders,' wrote Malik in a statement on his website. 'It is not how you want the story of a company you founded to end.'
Malik left Gigaom just over a year ago to become a partner at True Ventures, a venture capital firm. At that time, he wrote that the site had raised more than $8 million in new funding.
Malik, who was born in New Delhi, moved to New York in 1993 to be a writer for India Abroad, a leading newspaper for Indian diaspora in the United States, and later worked with Forbes. He was the co-founder of the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA).
Malik rose to become a prominent voice in the American tech press over the years. His writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and Brandweek. He was also a podcaster, starting with Revision3 and The GigaOm Show in 2007.
