Numerous reports indicate BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion is set to release a key update to its PlayBook tablet on Tuesday, February 21. RIM has already said on the record that the release was planned for sometime this month.

The BlackBerry news site N4BB, among others, said several sources have confirmed the release, a free update to current PlayBook owners, is set for February 21.

Another site, BlackBerryOS.com said 'Representatives at multiple Best Buy locations across the U.S. and Canada are receiving word that the PlayBook OS 2.0 upgrade will be made available to the public on Tuesday, February 21st.'

The highly-anticipated launch of RIM's first tablet last year, the PlayBook, ended up being a flop as the device shipped without key features in place, notably native email, calendar and contacts, which could only be accessed if the device was connected to a BlackBerry smartphone.

Sales of the PlayBook were underwhelming and the company was forced to knock a few thousand bucks off the MRP to help move inventory.

PlayBook 2.0 software adds email, calendaring and a host of other features including access to Android applications and slick integration with social media services like Facebook and Twitter so you don't have to be switching apps to be connected with those services.

The release of PlayBook 2.0 will also be the first significant under announcement under new CEO Thorstein Heins, who replaced the long-standing co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie late last month.
