Speaking at the silver jubilee event of the country's telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is aiming to roll out the 6G telecom network by the end of the decade, and a taskforce has started working on the same. Emphasizing the need to double down on this technology, he said that 5G technology will contribute $450 billion to India's economy in the next decade and a half. At present, India has 3G and 4G telecom networks and is gearing up for 5G launch over the next few months. Speaking about the past, he said that the 2G era was marked with “corruption and policy paralysis” but with the advent of 4G, the country moved towards transparency. PM Modi also highlighted that the mobile manufacturing units in India have expanded from 2 to more than 200 and the country is “today the world's biggest mobile manufacturing hub”.

Noting the current trends, he said that the teledensity and Internet users are fast expanding in the country. The prime minister also said that his government has encouraged healthy competition that has led to India having one of the cheapest telecom data charges in the world. “Indigenous 5G test bed in telecom sector is an important step in India's self-reliance,” he added.

Now, looking towards the 6G networks, PM Modi intends to focus on the next phase of the telecom technology from the get-go so India does not lag behind other countries when the global roll out of the new bandwidth begins. A taskforce has begun working on the same.

Timing is crucial as various researches are already underway in Europe, China, Japan and USA to become a leader in not only 5G but also 6G technology. The deployment of just 5G network is being looked at as a trillion dollar global opportunity for mobile industries and 6G will only increase its scope further.
