PM to inaugurate Indian Science Congress

Alerted by the recent terror attack on IISc Bangalore, security has been tightened for the 93rd ISC, to begin in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Alerted by the recent terror strike on scientists at Indian Institute on Science (IISc), Bangalore, security has been tightened for the 93rd Indian Science Congress (ISC), to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The campus of Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), the host of ISC, has been made a virtual fortress while more than 11,000 security personnel have been deployed in and around the city, police said.

On the occasion, Singh would announce and present the first India Science Award, carrying a purse of 25 lakh besides felicitating the best scientist and young scientists, Dr S Raghu Vardhan Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) and Chairman of ISC organising committee, told reporters on Monday.

President APJ Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the theme of the Congress - 'Integrated Rural Development: Science and Technology' on January five, Reddy said.

Kalam would also take part in the first-ever National Virtual Congress of Farmers and Children Science Congress, and interact with farmers from five states through video-conferencing, he added.

The meet is expected to be attended by over 6,000 delegates including three Noble laureates - Amartya Sen, Richard R Ernst and Wangari Mathai.

The Congress will devote some of its deliberations to issues like how to make science beneficial for the poor and include features, discussions, involving non-governmental agencies, farmers and industry representatives.
