While the world waits for Samsung to present its first smartwatch in the lead up to IFA on September 4, the tech world is abuzz with rumors on the features of the device bloggers are calling the 'Galaxy Gear,' pending Samsung's announcement of the official name. According to GigaOM, the watch is likely to feature a 2.5' screen and run under Android 4.1.

Citing 'sources close to Samsung,' the American tech website reports that the Galaxy Gear will sport a square 2.5' OLED touchscreen with a resolution of 320x320 pixels. Other features predicted include an integrated NFC chip, a camera and integrated speakers. The smartwatch is said to include a dual-core Exynos processor clocking out at 1.5GHz, allowing it to run under the Android 4.1 platform. A Bluetooth connection will reportedly allow the device to connect to other Samsung terminals. The site also reports that the smartwatch has already been sent to certain developers.

The South Korean electronics giant could officially kick off the smartwatch battle with the presentation of the Galaxy Gear, as the concept has piqued the interest of other industry leaders, including Apple and Qualcomm. Smartwatches are seen as a relatively affordable and easy-to-wear form of wearable technology, making them a viable alternative to Google's ambitious Glass project. For the time being, Sony is the only major electronics brand with a smart, connected watch on the market, after launching its SmartWatch in 2012.
