The idea is that this second portion of the display can be used for fast access to apps and settings or for displaying notifications without distracting the user or cluttering the main screen. It is a very intelligent solution to dealing with the problem of multitasking on a mobile device.

When it was unexpectedly revealed at the IFA in Germany in September it ended up being the star of the show, even though Samsung used the same event to unveil its flagship Galaxy Note 4 phablet, a virtual reality headset and a standalone smartwatch that could connect to the internet without a phone.

As well as a novel display though, the handset has a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-facing camera optimize for selfies -- even though it is meant to be aimed at business users primarily.

Samsung also claims that the battery can be charged to 50% in 30 minutes and that its ultra power-saving mode will extend standby time for up to 24 hours.
The handset will be available in black or white and as for its cost, Samsung says that 'Carriers and retail partners will confirm specific pricing, availability and specifications.'

The announcement of an official launch comes as a surprise as Samsung had hinted that the phablet was so complicated to build that it wouldn't be going into mass production this year.
